TEXT MESSAGING GROWTH (SMS) UK GSM NETWORK OPERATOR TOTALS June 1998 - October 2002
Octobers figure takes the UK text messaging annual total so far to over 13 billion, against a 12 month MDA forecast of 16 billion for 2002. In December text messaging celebrates its tenth birthday. As the figures continue to show, texting has become the most inclusive communications tool for the new millennium. Mike Short, Chairman of the MDA commented on the startling growth of text messaging, "SMS has come a long way since 1992. It has become more than just a messaging service, with innovations such as text 'n win competitions, text voting, text poetry, new text languages, business text and mobile marketing campaigns. The versatility of text appeals to people in all situations." The Text.it website (www.text.it) is an information service run by the Mobile Data Association (MDA) to provide text-related statistics, news and trivia to text experts and novices alike. |
