FIRST OFFICIAL PICTURE MESSAGING TOTAL RELEASED
21/12/06
For Immediate Release : Thursday 21 December 06
Conditions Of Use : MDA to be credited as source.
The eagerly anticipated first announcement of picture messaging figures was made today by the Mobile Data Association (MDA). During the third quarter of 2006, an astonishing 88 million picture messages (MMS) were sent throughout the UK on average, almost 1 million per day throughout July, August and September. Octobers total was the highest yet, with 30 million picture messages sent across the networks.

The MDA revealed earlier this year that over half of the UK’s phones are picture-capable, and as the number of people using camera phones grows, more and more users are realising the full potential of their handsets by sending and receiving the photographs they take. There’s no doubt that the office parties currently in full swing will provide ample opportunity for the sending of picture messages, and with new camera-phones landing in stockings up and down the country on Christmas morning - the UK’s first five megapixel camera phone is now available from LG, with one and two megapixel cameras becoming commonplace in handsets – what better way to share your seasonal experiences than via picture messaging?  Higher resolution pictures can be automatically scaled down to make them small enough to send, and with the capability to include hundreds of characters and voice clips, users are starting to utilise picture messaging more and more imaginatively.

Earlier this year, the MDA launched its Picture Messaging Campaign to encourage people to get started with picture messaging, which includes the publishing of generic ‘how to’ information on its successful messaging website, www.text.it . Users can find information on how to set up their phones to send and receive picture messages, troubleshooting tips, FAQ’s, and links to online photo libraries and mobile blog sites at www.text.it/picturemessaging. A questionnaire designed to establish attitudes towards MMS is also available, the results of which will lead to the development of further user-led advice.

  • The Mobile Data Association (MDA) was established in 1994 to increase awareness of mobile data amongst users and their advisers. The MDA acts as a focal point for its members, (vendors and users) and outside parties interested in knowing more about the industry
  • The MDA also announces the total number of chargeable person-to-person text messages sent on behalf of the UK GSM Network operators, and the number of Mobile Internet users each month. For further information visit the MDA website at www.themda.org  or the Text It Campaign web site at www.text.it
  • 2006 marks the launch of Phase 1 of the MDA’s generic awareness campaign to promote the advantages of picture messaging across all networks, and provide a current information service through the text.it website for both consumers and business users.
Mike Short, MDA Chairman is available for comment
