| November's figure of 3.8 billion text messages takes the annual total so far to a staggering 37 billion, according to figures released today by the Mobile Data Association (MDA). |

Person-to-person texts sent across the UK GSM network operators last month show an incredible increase of 1 billion on the total sent during the same period in 2005. November’s total represents an average of 126 million text messages currently sent per day in the UK.
With the festive season now well and truly upon us, many SMS promotions and services have been available to help everyone’s Christmas plans run smoothly. Woolworths have used text messages to alert customers that presents and other goods ordered are available to be picked up. A spokesman said: "Keeping people informed in this way really puts our customer’s minds at ease about relying on the store to have their presents ready for Christmas”. Andrew Cowles, whose company Kapow! provided the service, said: "Yet again text messaging shows that it’s the most effective communication tool in use currently. Use of simple technology like this has a hugely positive and positively disproportional effect compared with cost and effort on customer impact. With regard to Father Christmas, watch this space..."
On 4th January 2006 the Mobile Data Association will be announcing the total number of text messages sent on New Year’s Day - 2006’s figure was 165 million and is the highest ever daily total yet recorded. The MDA advises to text early to avoid disappointment or delayed delivery! |
