1.What do I need to use Multimedia Messaging/Picture messaging?

  You will need:
  • An MMS Capable phone
  • MMS phone settings (usually pre-set or can be obtained from your service provider) Most networks will send the settings you need to your phone as one or more text messages (SMS). Visit your Operator’s website or contact Customer Services to receive these. You could just try sending a picture message (some networks need you to send one before you can receive one) - you could even send it to yourself! If it is not received within a few mnutes, go to your service provider's website or call customer services.
  • MMS provisioned on your account – usually pre-set – otherwise call your service provider
  • If you haven’t got a camera on your phone you can still send and receive pictures and multimedia messages

3. How do I send a picture message?

Once your phone is set up and ready for you to send and receive picture messages, take a photo with your camera phone, click Send, add some text or sound to it, enter the number or email address you want to send it to, then send it. It's a simple as that!
In the first instance, we recommend you check your phone’s manual, but the following tips should help:
  • Turn the camera on.
There may be a camera button on the front or side of your phone. If you have a joystick or central navigation key, try pushing it in different directions to turn the camera on. Or, go to your phone’s main menu and choose the ‘camera’ option.
  • Take a photo
Click the camera button again or choose ‘Capture’
  • Send the picture message
Choose send, or choose options and then send. Some phones ask you to store the photo before you send it* (see below). Add some text if you want to, choose who to send it to then press send. You can either ‘Send to number’ to send to one person or ‘Send to many’ to send to more than one person.

If you don’t have a camera on your phone, you can still send and receive pictures. You can send one of the pictures stored in your phone or send a long text message of up to 1000 characters. To send, go to the main menu on your phone and choose the messaging options. Then select ‘picture message’ or ‘multimedia message’ (MMS)

4. *How do I send a photo I have stored on my phone?

There are two ways to send a message with a picture you created earlier: -
  1. Either go the messaging section on your phone’s menu and choose “create multi-media message” or "create MMS". Then you will be able to add some text and insert a picture or sound.

  2. Or – go to the picture you want to send and there will be an option to send it via multimedia or MMS.
Finally, how NOT to use...

Please read the following advice from O2:
Using a mobile phone network to send recordings or photos of a violent act is an offence. In addition, people who receive such messages and then forward them to others rea also acting unlawfully.

Under the Communications Act the maximum penalty is a six month prison sentence, a fine of up to £5,000 or possibly both. O2 recommend you contact the police or O2 on  08705 214 000 if you have received a message with a photo or recording of a violent act, if you have been the victim of a potential offence recorded on a camera phone or if you have other concerns. They will give you practical help and also help the police by barring customers who are found to have committed an unlawful act.
